Lust is one of the seven deadly sins because it overwhelms rationality and re-productivity with desire, and it thus represents a threat to the social order. Yet, lust is also tied to one’s power position and can be a driving force behind the oppressive tendencies as well as powering the emancipatory utopia. After all, the very first testimony in Dante´s Inferno V is provided by a lustful woman who is thus allowed to speak out for herself. It is this desire to be recognized as a speaking subject that will interest us. A fragile and always-to-be negotiated interstice between policing and politics, law and love. An interface between what’s lost and what’s here to last that our shared afternoon and evening will be dealing with.

Within the context of a post-socialist country, being both lost and experiencing a lust for Europe is a lasting condition. Still, after being accepted without truly becoming equal, it is very rare to question the principles upon which Europe builds its legitimacy as a continent where democracy was born. The exclusive access to fortress Europe is conditioned by violent military operations on its borders and rests upon a selective solidarity. How should the contemporary Left in the Former East approach such hypocrisy? Have we lost the lust for the internationalist utopia for good? How was lust mobilized within the capitalist and neoliberal economic transformations of Eastern Europe, when their markets were being opened to the world? What lessons can we learn today from the historical experiences of the Black Communist women, Roma female activists and other marginalized fighters?

Agnes Gagyi: Global crisis, green transition and Eastern Europe: Comments from a social power perspective

What was our region’s place in the post-1945 global capitalist cycle, and its long downturn since the 1970’s that shaped the conditions of today’s global crisis? What was East Europe’s role in the process of European integration, and how did it relate to the global dynamics of Global South deindustrialization and the rise of China? What are the contemporary contours of global green transition politics among a post-neoliberal shift towards protectionist trade and industrial policy, geopolitical tensions and militarization? What is our region’s position within those shifts, and how can we envision popular agency to engage with them? This talk speaks to those questions from the perspective of a social power approach, which foregrounds the question of economic power within climate politics.

Agnes Gagyi is a sociologist, working on East European politics and social movements from the perspective of the region’s long-term world market integration. Her recent publications include Middle class politics and the global crisis in Eastern Europe (Palgrave, 2021), Eastern Europe 30 years into the ‚transition‘: New left perspectives from the region (with Ondřej Slačálek, Palgrave 2021), and Contemporary housing struggles: A structural field of contention approach (with Ioana Florea and Kerstin Jacobsson, Palgrave 2022). She is a researcher at the University of Gothenburg, and a co-founder of the Solidarity Economy Center, Budapest.

Boris Buden: Communism – an enemy we cannot live without

Isn’t it weird that anti-communism has survived the collapse of the historical communism? It obviously plays a significant role in the ideological reproduction of the post-communist reality. But which role precisely? Does it prevent a possible return of the communist zombies? Or makes us rather believe that no threat to existing order can come from the future, and that there is no possibility whatsoever of abrupt change or mutation in history, in short, that the idea of Revolution is dead. The lecture will focus on the rhetorics of anti-communism and its performative effects on our historical experience. It will address the cultural translation of social conflicts and the new geopolitical map of the world it has created, concretely the emergence of the new normative identity blocks. Finally, it will try to answer the question, why the post-communist transition is ending in war. 

Boris Buden is a writer, cultural theorist and translator based in Berlin. Born in former Yugoslavia he studied philosophy in Zagreb and received his PhD in cultural theory from Humboldt University in Berlin. Since the beginning of the 1980s Buden publishes essays and books on critical and cultural theory, psychoanalysis, politics and contemporary art in Croatian, German and English. He teaches at universities in Europe and lectures worldwide. Recently published: Transition to Nowhere: Art in History After 1989, Berlin 2020.

Marina Gržinić: The LUST of Europe in the time of racial capitalism: disposed refugees, turbo fascist nationalisms, and necrocapitalism
The talk will be addressing the notion of Europe, the left and right, democracy, decoloniality and racial capitalism that is everywhere working hand in hand with necrocapitalism.

Marina Gržinić lives and works in Ljubljana, Slovenia and Vienna, Austria. She is a doctor of philosophy, a researcher at the Institute of Philosophy of the ZRC SAZU (Scientific and Research Center, Slovene Academy of Science and Arts) Ljubljana, and a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. She is artist and curator. Presently she is completing in collaboration with Tjaša Kancler and Jovita Pristovšek the experimental-documentary video film, Insurgent Flows. Trans*Decolonial and Black Marxist Futures (2023). Gržinić just coedited a volume Political Choreographies, Decolonial Theories, Trans Bodies (Cambridge Scholars Publishing 2023).

Jodi Dean: Comrades: Lessons from Black Communist Women
During the first decades of the twentieth century, Black women were leading organizers with the Communist Party of the United States. They developed mass campaigns against Southern lynch-law, capitalist exploitation, fascism, and US imperialism. They offered a unique and innovative theory of Black women’s triple oppression. And their politics was militantly internationalist. This lecture draws lessons from the writing of Black Communist women that are important for activists and organizers today. Talk will be followed by a conversation with Alica Sigmund Heráková.

Jodi Dean teaches and organizes in Geneva, New York. She is the author editor of fourteen books, including: The Communist Horizon, Crowds and Party, Comrade: An Essay on Political Belonging, and Organize, Fight, Win: Black Communist Women’s Political Writing, co-edited with Charisse Burden-Stelly, all published by Verso.

Alica Sigmund Heráková 
Publicist, producer and cultural manager, since 2018 member of the Government Council for Roma Minority Affairs. Since 2018 she has been leading the Tuke.TV project, an independent production platform in audiovisual and online television supporting Roma creators. She is the editor of the publication of the Museum of Romani Culture Amendar I and II., dramaturge of the accompanying events of the Roma and Sinti Centre in Prague. Her key themes are media Representation, Roma participation and gender equality.

Ústrednou témou podujatia L*st, after all je stratenosť (lost), žiadostivosť (lust), pretrvávanie (last).

Žiadostivosť je smrteľným hriechom, pretože túžbou valcuje racionalitu a re-produktivitu a ohrozuje tak spoločenský poriadok. Žiadostivosť je zároveň neoddeliteľnou súčasťou vyjednávania mocenských pozícií a môže byť tak hnacou silou útlaku, ako i emancipačných utópií. Nakoniec, v Danteho Pekle V prednáša vôbec prvé svedectvo epickej básne práve smilná žena, ktorá tu získava výsadné právo obhajovať sa, vystupovať za seba a v svojom mene. Počas jedného zdieľaného popoludnia nás bude zaujímať predovšetkým toto právo byť uznaný*á za subjekt, ktorý hovorí. Budeme skúmať krehkú a vždy nanovo vyjednávanú hranicu medzi výkonom moci a politikou, medzi zákonom a subverzivitou lásky. Pohybovať sa budeme na rozhraní medzi tým, čo sa stráca a tým, čo má pretrvať. 
V kontexte postsocialistickej krajiny, ktorou sme, pretrváva tak pocit našej vlastnej stratenosti, ako chtíč po Európe. Boli sme síce prijatí*é, ale bez toho, že by sme sa stali rovnými. Napriek tomu u nás len zriedka počuť hlasy, ktoré by problematizovali princípy, na ktorých Európa stavia svoju legitimitu ako kontinentu, na ktorom vznikla demokracia. Exkluzívny prístup do pevnosti Európa vychádza zo selektívnej solidarity a je podmienený násilnými vojenskými operáciami na jej hraniciach. Ako by sa súčasná ľavica “bývalého Východu” mala vztiahnuť k takýmto politikám pokrytectva? Stratili sme už úplne túžbu po internacionálnej utópii? Ako boli túžby a žiadostivosť mobilizované v čase kapitalistických a neoliberálnych ekonomických reforiem, keď sa východoeurópske trhy otvárali svetu? Čo sa môžeme naučiť z historických skúseností černošských komunistiek, rómskych aktivistiek a ďalších bojovníčok*kov?

Akú pozíciu mal náš región v globálnom kapitalistickom cykle po roku 1945, ako i počas jeho dlhotrvajúceho úpadku od 70. rokov, ktorý vytvoril podmienky pre vznik súčasnej globálnej krízy? Aká bola úloha východnej Európy v procese európskej integrácie a ako súvisela s globálnou dynamikou deindustrializácie globálneho Juhu a so vzostupom Číny? Aké obrysy dnes nadobúda globálna politika ekologickej transformácie, medzi postneoliberálnym posunom k protekcionistickej obchodnej a priemyselnej politike, geopolitickým napätím a militarizáciou? Aká je pozícia nášho regiónu uprostred týchto zmien a ako by mohla vyzerať ľudová agencia, ktorá by sa s nimi vyrovnala? Prednáška sa bude zaoberať týmito otázkami z perspektívy spoločenskej moci, ktorá v rámci klimatických politík kladie do popredia otázku ekonomickej moci. 

Agnes Gagyi je sociologička, ktorá sa zaoberá východoeurópskou politikou a sociálnymi hnutiami z perspektívy dlhodobej integrácie regiónu na svetovom trhu. Medzi jej nedávne publikácie patria: Middle class politics and the global crisis in Eastern Europe (Politika strednej triedy a globálna kríza vo východnej Európe, Palgrave, 2021), Eastern Europe 30 years into the „transition“: New left perspectives from the region (Východná Európa 30 rokov po „transformácii“: Nové ľavicové perspektívy z regiónu, spolu s Ondřejom Slačálkom, Palgrave 2021) a Contemporary housing struggles: A structural field of contention approach (Súčasné boje o bývanie: Prístup založený na štrukturálnom poli sporu, s Ioanou Floreou a Kerstin Jacobsson, Palgrave 2022). Pôsobí ako výskumná pracovníčka na Univerzite v Göteborgu a je spoluzakladateľkou Centra solidárnej ekonomiky v Budapešti.

Boris Buden: Komunizmus – nepriateľ, bez ktorého nevieme žiť

Nie je to čudné, že antikomunizmus prežil pád historického komunizmu? Očividne zohráva významnú úlohu v ideologickej reprodukcii postkomunistickej reality. Ale akú úlohu presne? Zabraňuje prípadnému návratu komunistických zombies? Alebo nás skôr utvrdzuje v presvedčení, že žiadne ohrozenie existujúceho poriadku nemôže prísť z budúcnosti a že neexistuje vôbec nijaká možnosť náhlej zmeny alebo mutácie dejín, skrátka, že idea Revolúcie je mŕtva. Prednáška sa bude venovať rétorike antikomunizmu a jej performatívnym účinkom na našu historickú skúsenosť. Bude sa zaoberať kultúrnym prekladom sociálnych konfliktov a novou geopolitickou mapou sveta, ktorú vytvorila, konkrétne vznikom nových normatívnych identitárnych blokov. A nakoniec sa tiež pokúsi hľadať odpoveď na otázku, prečo postkomunistická transformácia vyúsťuje do vojny.

Boris Buden je spisovateľ, kultúrny teoretik a prekladateľ pôsobiaci v Berlíne. Narodil sa v bývalej Juhoslávii, vyštudoval filozofiu v Záhrebe a doktorát z kultúrológie získal na Humboldtovej univerzite v Berlíne. Od začiatku 80. rokov Buden publikuje eseje a knihy v chorvátčine, nemčine a angličtine, venované kritickej a kultúrnej teórii, psychoanalýze, politike a súčasnému umeniu. Vyučuje na univerzitách v Európe a prednáša po celom svete. Nedávno vyšla jeho publikácia Transition to Nowhere: Art in History After 1989 (Prechod do Nikam: Umenie v dejinách po roku 1989), Berlín 2020.

Marina Gržinić: Túžba po Európe v čase rasového kapitalizmu: vyhostení*é utečenci*kyne, turbofašistické nacionalizmy a nekrokapitalizmus

Prednáška sa bude zaoberať pojmami Európa, ľavica a pravica, demokracia, dekoloniálnosť a rasový kapitalizmus, ktorý vždy funguje ruku v ruke s nekrokapitalizmom.

Marina Gržinić žije a pracuje v Ľubľane v Slovinsku a vo Viedni v Rakúsku. Je doktorkou filozofie, vedeckou pracovníčkou Filozofického inštitútu ZRC SAZU (Vedecko-výskumné centrum Slovinskej akadémie vied a umení) v Ľubľane a profesorkou na Akadémii výtvarných umení vo Viedni. Je umelkyňou a kurátorkou. V súčasnosti dokončuje v spolupráci s Tjašou Kancler a Jovitou Pristovšeko experimentálno-dokumentárny film s názvom Insurgent Flows. Trans*Decolonial and Black Marxist Futures (Povstalecké prúdy. Trans*dekoloniálne a černošské marxistické budúcnosti), (2023). Jodi Dean: Súdružky: Lekcie od černošských komunistiek

V prvých desaťročiach dvadsiateho storočia boli černošské ženy vedúcimi organizátorkami Komunistickej strany Spojených štátov. Rozvíjali masové kampane proti južanskému lynču, kapitalistickému vykorisťovaniu, fašizmu a americkému imperializmu. Vytvorili výnimočnú a inovatívnu teóriu trojitého útlaku černošských žien. Ich politika bola navyše militantne internacionalistická. Prednáška bude vychádzať zo spisov černošských komunistiek, ktoré sú dôležité aj pre súčasných aktivistov*tky a organizátorov*ky. Po prednáške bude nasledovať rozhovor s Alicou Sigmund Herákovou.

Jodi Dean vyučuje a pôsobí v Ženeve v štáte New York. Je autorkou a editorkou štrnástich kníh, vrátane: The Communist Horizon (Komunistický horizont), Crowds and Party (Davy a strana), Comrade: An Essay on Political Belonging (Súdruh*žka: Esej o politickej príslušnosti) a Organize, Fight, Win: Black Communist Women’s Political Writing (Organizovať sa, bojovať, zvíťaziť: Politické spisy černošských komunistiek), ktorá vyšla vo vydavateľstve Verso v spolupráci s Charisse Burden-Stelly.

Alica Sigmund Heráková

ublicistka, producentka a kultúrna manažérka, od roku 2018 členka Rady vlády pre záležitosti rómskej menšiny. Od roku 2018 vedie projekt Tuke.TV, čo je nezávislá produkčná platforma v oblasti audiovízie a online televízia, ktorá podporuje rómskych tvorcov*kyne. Je editorkou publikácie Múzea rómskej kultúry Amendar I a II. a dramaturgičkou sprievodných podujatí Centra Rómov a Sintov v Prahe. Kľúčovými témami, ktorými sa zaoberá, sú médiálna reprezentácia, participácia Rómov a rodová rovnosť.
